- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dianne Greenlay -- Intriguing storyline and characters : Any time you have a story that starts off with "Sin was in the thick August air", followed shortly by "Wickedness oozed from their sweaty pores," you know you're in for a great read. Opening at an old-time religious rally set in the Appalachian mountains, this novel quickly swept me into the life of Cady Blue, and of the mountain people who surrounded her. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from MC -- Wonderful read : I'm a huge fan of southern/Appalachian fiction so when I heard this had been released, I knew I had to read it. It's got everything: that deep southern flavor I love so much, twists and turns that keep you guessing, and characters that will win your heart. While the romance is there, the mystery element is strong, with secrets that go back for generations among both the family and the town. I've read several of this author's novels before, and I always enjoy her way with words. The prose in this one is beautiful. More than once, I found myself repeating a sentence or phrase simply because it was so pleasing. I won't give away any spoilers, but I will say it will make you think, and it ended exactly the way it needed to end. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from BA Plum -- A feel good read : From childhood, Cady Blue hears bells. A lot of people in the World War II Appalachia area where she lives think she's mentally slow. In fact, not much gets by Cady. But she keeps her head down and her dreams of someone to love to herself. Cady keeps a lot to herself because she knows how little people respect her. When a young boy goes missing during a revival, she finds a major clue. When she learns a secret about one of the most respected men in town, she keeps it to herself. When she recognizes the feelings she has for a returned war hero can go nowhere because he is married, she sucks it up and accepts she can't have what she wants. This is a romance so of course she and he do get together, but the journey there is a challenge Cady is up to: contempt, suspicion, and gossip. When she finally learns why she hears bells, her whole view of her past life is turned upside down. At the same time, she is free to accept her truth worth. A story, set during a time when life was not so much simpler because of class distinctions and social prejudices that still cannot beat down this heroine. A story to be savored. Highly recommended.
