Es un escrito comico donde Hernandez nos introduce a Pepe, propietario de una barberia en la Calle Ocho de Miami en la cual el cubaneo reina y la clientela nos deja saber que el humor, despues de un buen corte de pelo, nos ayuda a enfrentarnos a la vida con buena cara. Desde las primeras paginas la risa nos conmueve como si estuviesemos presenciando un show del famoso comico cubano Alvarez Guedez. Cada personaje que entra a la barberia tiene su propia idiosincracia. Mi favorito fue El Enfadado, una persona que todo en la vida lo enoja y que piensa que todos los problemas de esta sociedad se resolverian si el estuviera a cargo. (Si yo fuera presidente... )Aunque este personaje es parte del elenco cubano del libro, en nuestras vidas conocemos muchas personas asi. Gracias a Hernandez por traernos alegria en tiempos que son dificiles para muchos por la pandemia. El que quiera pasar un buen rato con Pepe y sus amigos debe leer ese libro. Se los recomiendo. Not only because is such a funny book, but because it’s characters are a typical representation of the Cuban men of yesteryears that frequented the Cuban barber shops of La Calle Ocho and Little Havana. Fernan described each character and provided such an amazing dialogue between them and Pepe, the barber shop owner. This dialogue is so typically Cuban, that it reminded me of how life was in Miami way back then . Fernan also showed how compassionate, caring and supportive Pepe was about his clients, although, he lived alone due to the death of his wife and his children living in other states. He was able to portrait Pepe as living a fairly happy and satisfying life because of his attitude, being highly thought about and appreciated by his clients and the ownership of his barbershop. I highly recommend this book to all Spanish speaking people, to our younger Cuban generations and those not so young that enjoy learning about how life was in the Cuban barbershops through out the decades of our exile in this amazing country that opened its arms and received us when we needed the most. The exaggeration of some of the characters’ ways and beliefs made me laugh and laugh. The characters were all distinct and vivid. The setting so well described it was easy to feel like one was there at the barber shop. The book had great pace. It was a fast read. It is a book I will read more than once. It is peppered with refranes y dichos populares, many I remember so well that they made me smile. Fernan, the author, expertly developed the distinct voice of each character. The dialogues were cleverly crafted, especially the ones with “El Enredado”. It’s an easy book to read & you would wish you could walk in the barberia and meet the affable Pepe, he’s quite likable.
